Semen Collection Guide

In order to obtain sperm of optimal quality, it is important that patients follow clinic instructions for semen collection. Common instructions follow:

  • Do not have any sexual activity (ejaculation) for at least two days but not more than five days before obtaining the semen sample.

Note: Samples collected 2 days before and 7 days after the last semen outflow are not suitable for testing.

  • Lubricants should not be used unless directed by a physician.
  • Semen should be collected in a sterile, nontoxic plastic jar provided by the laboratory.  Other containers are not acceptable. Before pouring the sample into the container, it is best to bring the temperature to about 37 ° C (body temperature) by holding the container.

Note: Do not collect samples with condoms.

  • Care must be taken to dispose of the entire sample in a separate container and no amount will be discarded if only a portion of the sample is provided to the laboratory, resulting in an unrealistic result.

It is best to collect the sample in the laboratory, otherwise it should be collected within a maximum of half an hour while avoiding the sample being stored at temperatures below 30-37 ° C and above 40 ° C until the sample is delivered to Store it in a laboratory near body temperature (37 ° C).

  • After sampling, record the date and time of sampling on the container.

If microbiology is considered, one should first urinate, then wash their hands and genital area with soap and water, then rinse thoroughly and dry with a towel or wipes and collect the sample in a sterile container. In these cases, do not touch the inside of the container or inside the container door.

Upon receipt of the semen, complete and submit the semen sample receipt information form.

Note: The sample delivery time to the lab is 7:00 am to 11:00 am.

Receive the sample at the designated place, receive the receipt, and inform the acceptance and submit the semen test questionnaire form.
