Fasting Conditions Guidelines

Laboratory errors occur in three stages: pre-test, pre-test, and post-test.

The most common errors are related to the pre-test stage, such as patient preparation conditions, sample storage and transfer, etc. To prevent such errors, Payvand Clinical & Specialty laboratory has provided various guidelines to your esteemed clients.

Please, notice the conditions mentioned in this guide that is useful in obtaining accurate results and comparing them with normal values for the proper diagnosis and treatment by respected physicians.

If your physicians or lab co-workers ask you to go for a fasting test, please consider the following:

  • Avoid eating and drinking (except water) for a specified period before going to the lab. The recommended fasting time for blood lipid tests such as triglycerides and cholesterol is at least 12 hours and a maximum of 14 hours. However, if only fasting blood sugar is requested, 8 hours of fasting is also appropriate.

The best time to fast at night is to minimize bodily activity and in this case, the patient will be placed in the proper sampling condition in the morning.

  • Avoid drinking juice, tea and coffee during fasting, but drinking is prohibited unless instructed by a physician.
  • Avoid smoking, chewing gum, exercise and exercise during fasting. These can lead to irritation of the gastrointestinal and musculoskeletal system and changes in test results.
  • Fasting for infants is for 4 hours after the last lactation.
  • Talk to your health care provider about taking medication during fasting.

Fecal occult blood testing is required at least two days prior to the test and during the fecal sample collection period, eating red meat, white meat (poultry), fish, turnip, radish, broccoli, cauliflower, oranges, Avoid bananas, grapes, cantaloupe and melons as well as grains, pistachios, peanuts, raisins and corn. It is also recommended to avoid the following medications at least 2 days prior to the test:

  • Salicylates such as aspirin, other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as ibuprofen, indomethacin, sodium diclofenac), iron tablets (such as hematinic and Iron capsules), antacids, colchicine drugs, iodine and rosacea, diuretics, diuretics Vitamin C.

24-hour urine VMA testing should avoid foods such as coffee, vanilla, chocolate, bananas and cocoa 3 days prior to testing.

After sampling you can start a normal diet and daily activity.
