- Sampling for Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT) and GCT (pregnancy)
The test is performed on suspected diabetes mellitus (GTT), most commonly during pregnancy (GCT), and when fasting glucose is less than 140 mg / dL. Note that this test lacks the trait of being specific, meaning it is affected by diet, disease, and various variables. It is recommended to perform a urine sample for this test and to check for glucose with blood sampling every time.
Note that you should be in the lab for at least 3 to 4 hours for sampling.
- Fasting for 8-10 hours in the morning and do not eat any food, but you can drink water.
- Avoid smoking and drinking coffee and alcohol 36 hours before sampling.
- Co-ordinate with your physician when taking a drug or insulin injection in the morning.
- The lab expert will first take your fasting blood glucose (FBS) sample and then give you a sugar syrup (75 g GTT and 50 g GCT). Drink this syrup within 5 minutes and immediately inform our staff to announce your next sampling time in 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes. It should be noted that the frequency of sampling according to the physician can only be 60 to 120 minutes per sample.
- For the GTT test, sampling is recommended at all times above. However, during the GCT test blood sampling is taken only 60 minutes after the fasting blood sample.
- Don’t eat until all your sampling is complete, but drinking water is forbidden.
- Do not do physical activity during the sampling and avoid smoking.
- If you have vomited glucose syrup, be sure to take to our staff about repeating the test.
- After eating sugar syrup, you may experience dizziness, tremor, anxiety, sweating, and weakness. These conditions are usually transient, but if necessary, inform the Lab Staff to assist you.
