Screening Tests for Children & Adolescents

Adolescents are often thought of as the healthiest age group. However, habits formed during the teen years will likely affect your teen’s health well into adulthood. For example, helping an overweight or obese teen reduce his or her weight can prevent diabetes and heart disease in later years.

  • Complete blood count and ferritin test for the diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia in children
  • Complete urine culture and culture (especially in baby girls) to diagnose kidney disease and urinary tract infection
  • Increased lipids, especially cholesterol, for early detection and control of cardiovascular risk factors
  • Stool tests to detect parasitic infections
  • Thyroid hormone testing for early detection of hyperthyroidism or hyperthyroidism

It is interesting to know that the American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended in its latest guidelines routine screening of cholesterol in adolescents and young people. According to these guidelines, all adolescents should be tested cholesterol once between the ages of 2 and 4 and again at the age of 3 to 5 years.
